Red Saúco: health and contraindications benefits

This leafy bush of extended branches and bright berries grows everywhere: in sunny meadows and forests shaded, along roads, on vacant lots and even in landfills. The Red Saúco is used not only to design landscapes and make delicious jams, but also in popular medicine. Phytotherapists say: their berries, cooked in a special way, have antimicrobial, ant i-inflammatory, diaphoretic and expectorant action.

What is the Red Saúco

This perennial plant grows rapidly and begins to bear fruit in its third year of life. It can reach a height of 4-5 meters. Its cortex has a grayish tone, bright green leaves with sharp tips and yellowish or pearly flowers. The berries are grouped into large clusters. The red saúco can be cultivated artificially and grows well both in urban and private plots, likes moisture and shadow, but it is also able to withstand a long heat.

Benefits of the Red Saúco

Saúco is not only used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes, but also in everyday life. Their berries are used to make technical and alcohol oil, ink and coloring for drinks, jams and edible jams.

Red Saúco Contraindications

It cannot be said that to date the chemical composition of the plant has been thoroughly studied. However, it is known with certainty that contains a large amount of flavonoids – active substances that affect the action of enzymes in the body. In addition, it contains

Infusions and decoctions have a reconstituent effect on the body, are effective for acute respiratory infections, skin diseases, urinary infections and even tuberculosis. The drink made with the stems has a slight diuretic effect, eliminates edema, is useful for diabetes, helps reduce the accumulation of salt deposits in the joints.

In women’s inflammatory diseases, rhizomas decoction is suitable for vaginal showers. The infusion of flowers helps in hemorrhoids, pustulous skin lesions, hepatitis, diaper dermatitis and minor burns.

How to use


  1. Pour 3 liters of hot water with a spoonful of berries and leave infusion in a dark place for 24 hours. Drink 100 ml three times a day. The treatment lasts a month.
  2. Fres h-infused berries in alcohol help deal with calcareous spur, arthritis, osteochondrosis and osteomyelitis. Pour them into a mediu m-sized glass jar, fill with vodka, put in a dark place for a month. Use the tincture prepared for external compresses.
  3. With bronchitis, the following recipe helps: pour a glass of boiling water on a large crushed cortex, let stand for a couple of hours and take 100 ml 3 times a day.


  1. A decoction of dry inflorescences is good for stomatitis and throat pain. Fill a large spoonful of raw material with boiling water (250 ml), boil over low heat for 5 minutes and let cool. Use to make gargles several times a day.
  2. An excellent diuretic and diaphoretic is obtained by preparing a drink from twigs and dry leaves: 1 teaspoon cast with boiling water, keeping over 4-5 minutes and drinking 1 tablespoon after meals 3 times a day.

Cosmetic use

Saúco whites the face, reduces small inflammations, refreshes and delays the aging process.

Important: Previously a sensitivity test: apply a small amount of the mixture on the wrist and wait 10-15 minutes. If no redness, swelling or other unpleasant effects occurs, you can continue using the product with total security.

  1. The following infusion will help cure facial irritation: pour 6-7 inflorescences (dry) in 200 ml of hot water, leave infusion for 15-20 minutes under a lid, cool and strain. Clean the skin 2 times a day, avoiding the area of the eyes and mucous membranes, for fifteen days.
  2. Bleach the skin with the following tonic: pour 3 tablespoons of the raw material in boiling water, bring to boil and cool. Rub the skin in the morning and at night for 1. 5-2 weeks. Save the tonic in the refrigerator.

How to collect and store

All parts of the plant can be used, but they must be collected at different times: the cortex is cut in spring of young trees, in the Savia period, the flowers – as soon as they flourish.

The cortex is cut into fine layers, making transverse incisions separate 25-30 cm and joining them longitudinally. Do not pick up the berries immediately after the rain: they will get black and will be unusable. You have to wait for a sunny day, dry the outdoor pieces and grind them to make them flour.

Drive them in a fine layer on paper and put them in a shaded place with good ventilation. Once dry, crush them with the hands, tamort them, remove the peduncles and fir them in wooden boxes or cotton bags. Remove the bush berries as very soon at the end of August: swear in small bunches and cuélguelas so that they dry in a well ventilated room.

The cortex can be kept for 4 years, flowers for a year and berries for 6 months.

Damage and contraindications

The immature fruits of the Red Saúco are poisonous. They contain a glucoside, sambunigrine, based on cyanhydric acid. In large quantities it can cause tissue hypoxia, difficulty breathing and a slow heart rate, which can lead to a cardiac arrest. Therefore, they should not be ingested and it is essential to wash their hands after touching them.

Phytotherapists warn: it is difficult to distinguish between the berries of Saúco Negras and Rojas. The coloring of the berries can only be seen in the maturation period, and before, when the plant and branches have to be started, a rookie can make mistakes. If you doubt your knowledge, do not risk or suffer serious poisoning.

Important: Signs of berry poisoning include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, bitterness in the throat and tongue, stomach cramps, disorientation, diarrhea, rapid pulse, excessive saliva production. If you notice one or more signs, be sure to wash the stomach (with a pale solution of manganese or just plenty of clean water) and call an ambulance. The children’s body is not capable of coping on its own with this type of poisoning, so the risk of death is high.
